Barninger & Couch

Threshold is a wall art piece produced by Justin Couch in 2007. The piece examines digital manipulation of images and the extent to which this can change the effect of an image. It also is meant to show the extreme control that digital tools offer. The piece is named after the Photoshop filter that was used to produce each image. The Threshold function turns an image into pure black and white and has 256 different levels of doing so, thus one image produces 256.

A detail shot of the image used in the piece. Justin used a self-portrait as the base image and the differences between adjacent squares is almost imperceptible to the human eye. It is only by viewing the entire piece that one sees the whole transition.
