Jeffrey Barninger and Justin Couch first met when they began working at the Off The Block Artisans Program, Jeffrey as full-time and Justin as the Artist-In-Residence. They quickly realized that they shared similar goals, ideals, and outlooks on furniture and design. Soon they began collaborating on each other's personal work, and eventually the Negative line brought them together as a true design team.

Both recognize the lack of a vibrant contemporary design scene in the Mid-Atlantic area and they are committed to putting it on the map. They are devoted to being honest to themselves as artists and designers and to the area as a future incubator of talent and ideas.
